Swindon Rendering still installs traditional sand and cement render where it's the right tool: garden walls, garages, patch-matching older properties, and budget-conscious jobs heading for a painted finish. Done properly — correct mix ratios, waterproofer, movement provision and proper curing — it remains a legitimate, economical render.
Done badly, it's the render that gave rendering a bad name: too strong a mix, no beads, applied in one thick coat, cracked within two winters. Most of the render repair work we see is failed sand and cement.

Where sand & cement still makes sense
Garden and boundary walls
Through-coloured systems are wasted on garden walls — a well-mixed cement render with a fair-faced or sponged finish does the job at half the price.
Garages and outbuildings
Practical, paintable, economical — the default for structures that don't justify system render.
Matching existing render
Extensions and repairs on already-rendered houses often need sand and cement to match texture and behaviour.
Budget full renders
At £35–£55/m² plus painting it's the cheapest full-house route — with the honest caveat that it needs repainting every 8–12 years.
Doing traditional render properly
The failures are predictable and avoidable: mixes stronger than the background (a 1:1:6 or 1:0.5:4.5 cement:lime:sand mix suits most brickwork better than a hard 1:3), scratch coat and top coat rather than one heavy pass, uPVC or stainless stop beads instead of rusting galvanised, and slow curing — misted in hot weather, protected in cold. Lime in the mix gives the render flexibility and workability that pure cement mixes lack.
If you're weighing traditional against modern systems for a whole house, the comparison is simple: sand and cement is cheapest today; through-coloured silicone or monocouche costs more once and then never needs painting.
Monocouche rendering
The modern one-coat alternative — through-coloured, no painting.
